Buckhannon Academy Elementary

The Gifted Program at BAES--Bridge Unit

As an introduction to a bridge unit, 4th graders had a challenge to build paper bridges to span 8 inches. Students were only allowed to use one piece of 8 ½” x 11” paper. Using pennies for weights, Lillian Fetty created the winning bridge with an accordion fold design. Her bridge held 77 pennies.

After researching types of bridges, 4th graders participated in a Popsicle bridge challenge. They were asked to propose a model of a bridge to the City of Buckhannon that would hold at least 15 pounds. With a budget of 200 Popsicle sticks and limited glue, students worked in a team to develop a plan and create a model of a bridge spanning 14 inches.
