🥩 The connection between our schools and community extends all the way to the lunch tray.

Through our Child Nutrition Program, Upshur County Schools recently procured 38 forty-pound cases of ground beef from Shorts Family Farm, bringing locally sourced food directly into our cafeterias. Partnerships like these support local agriculture, strengthen our local economy, and provide students with quality meals made possible by the people who call Upshur County home.

Stacks of open cardboard boxes filled with packaged ground beef are stored in a refrigerated food storage area. Several boxes are handwritten with the name "Eldon Short," identifying the local supplier. The boxes contain large sealed packages of ground beef stacked on pallets and shelves, with additional food service boxes visible along both sides of the storage room. The images document locally sourced ground beef purchased from Shorts Family Farm for use in the Upshur County Schools Child Nutrition Program.

Professional Learning in Action: Literacy Matters

Strong readers become strong learners.

Today, educators at Buckhannon Academy Elementary School engaged in professional development with 95% Phonics, deepening their understanding of Tier II intervention strategies designed to strengthen literacy outcomes for students who need additional support.

By expanding their knowledge of evidence-based reading instruction, our teachers are building the skills and systems needed to help students develop foundational literacy skills and become confident, successful readers.

Professional Learning Day is an investment in our educators so they can continue making a difference for students every day.

Educators participate in a professional learning session in a classroom setting. Several tables are arranged throughout the room with staff members seated in small groups reviewing materials, taking notes, and discussing instructional strategies. A presenter stands at the front of the room near a large display screen showing presentation content. Notebooks, instructional resources, laptops, and water bottles are visible on the tables. Classroom bulletin boards and educational displays line the walls. The professional development session focused on 95% Phonics and Tier II literacy intervention strategies to strengthen reading instruction and support student literacy growth.
🚌 Bus Stop Safety Is a Shared Responsibility 🛑

Every school day, our students rely on families, bus operators, and motorists working together to ensure a safe trip to and from school. Bus stops are important places where patience and attention matter.

Drivers: When a school bus has its stop arm extended and red warning lights flashing, West Virginia law requires you to stop and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion, the driver signals you to proceed, or the warning lights are turned off.

Violating this law carries serious consequences:

⚠️ First offense: $500-$1,000 fine, possible jail time, and a 60-day license suspension.
⚠️ Second offense: $1,000-$1,500 fine, possible jail time, and a 180-day license suspension.
⚠️ Third or subsequent offense: $2,000 fine, jail time, and a one-year license suspension.

A little extra patience behind the wheel helps keep school transportation running safely and smoothly for everyone. Thank you for doing your part and stopping for the bus. 💛🚌

🍁 As the leaves change and autumn settles in, we're grateful to be part of a community that supports students, values education, and grows together. Here's to building better tomorrows, one season at a time. 🌻📚 #UpshurCountySchools #ILoveWVPublicSchools

A fall-themed scarecrow display stands on a downtown sidewalk in front of a brick building. The scarecrow has a pumpkin head, straw hair, glasses, a black hat decorated with a sunflower, a blue-and-white scarf, and a school ID badge. It holds a sign reading “Students, Staff, Community, Success.” Beside the scarecrow, wooden signs list “Educate,” “Support,” “Planning,” “Partnerships,” and “Better Tomorrows.” A flower pot filled with colorful autumn flowers displays an “I ❤️ WV Public Schools” logo. The display is decorated with sunflowers, straw, and fall foliage.
